Kerala Journal of Ophthalmology (KJO) has reached a major milestone in its journey. This is the culmination of the efforts of our editorial board and senior office bearers for the past many months. Though still raw in its bite, this is the first taste of the fruit of all this effort – the first issue of KJO from our new publishers “Medknow” and the first major step towards making KJO a peer-reviewed and indexed journal.

In the pre-internet era when there was limited information access, the awareness about publishing our work and innovation was not as much as it is today. But with the stringent academic requirements coupled with the sophistication that has come about in our specialty, it has become a necessity to imbibe from, as well as contribute to, peer-reviewed publications in order to not only keep pace with what is new but also for growth in an academic career.

Kerala Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons is a state society with members from all over the state including rural Kerala. Bringing a peer-reviewed journal to their doorstep and creating an opportunity for our members to publish their work in a setting at par with international standards is an editor's dream and an academician's opportunity. With this step, it is gradually becoming a reality.

Our journal has a dedicated website now. It has an online submission system whereby anybody can submit an article at any time of day or night. We have a panel of eminent reviewers from all over the country who are going to critically review your work and share their comments. You can track your submissions and will have ample scope to modify and improve upon your work utilizing these state of the art facilities.

The screening procedures have become more structured and strict to keep up with international standards and only the best original work will be selected for publication. Indexing a journal will also help to identify plagiarism and ensure that our work is also not plagiarized and used elsewhere anytime in the future. Such things are easily enabled only in indexed journals and may not be possible if the journal articles are not indexed. We should keep in mind that indexed articles will be viewed by a wider audience, and we should take this opportunity to project ourselves well to be known and appreciated by the worldwide community of ophthalmologists.

Acceptance of a journal for indexing is solely dependent on the standard of articles contributed, and the credit for the same goes to the writers, reviewers, as well as to the editorial board. The utmost responsibility as well as credit lies with the authors who should ensure to give their best to contribute a better article that can increase the rank of the article and in turn the journal and improve the performance index of the author.

This is only a beginning. In keeping with Kaizen, a Japanese system for continuous improvement, our journal should strive for further increase in quality. So, contribute judiciously and wholeheartedly so that the journal articles as well as the authors improve one step with every journal article contributed.

I have an appeal. This is an opportunity that only few state societies are able to offer to their members. Utilize this to the maximum. Submit as many publications as you can. Encourage your juniors, fellows, and postgraduate students to do the same. This will not only improve the journal but also the scientific milieu of our state society.

I thank all the members for allowing me to take this bold step and request your wholehearted support in the future.
